Résumé
This study focuses on analysing the functioning of the maize and beans value chains in the Central and Western Regions of Uganda, with a particular emphasis on price transmission and logistics within specific marketing channels where WFP serves as the key end-buyer. The objective is to identify prevailing bottlenecks, inefficiencies, and imbalances that hinder smallholder farmers (SHF) and other actors in the target chains from fully benefiting from local and regional food procurement. The study also aims to determine whether these constraints can be addressed through procurement, including the use of pro-SHF contract modalities, supply chain optimization, and programmatic chain interventions implemented by WFP and/or its partners. Additionally, an assessment of the paper-based traceability (PBT) system, implemented since June 2021 by the Uganda CO, was conducted to examine challenges, best practices, and to provide recommendations for improvement.
