The WFP / Mastercard Foundation (MCF) Partnership ‘Strengthening food systems to promote increased value chain employment opportunities for youth’, particularly women, aims to support employment through strengthening local food systems focusing on enhancing efficiency, reducing post-harvest losses, increasing access to reliable and remunerative market opportunities, promoting value addition, and introducing innovative digital solutions. The VCA conducted in Mozambique under the MCF partnership covers the maize, cassava, and sesame value chains of the northern regions of Mozambique. The VCA focused on identifying opportunities for supporting employment for youth at the selected VCs. The VCA revealed that there a number of constraints at the production, aggregation, and processing levels that hinders VC efficiency and discourages youth from participation. For gender and youth, the main constraints in participation are limited to no decision making power over income, limited financial literacy, limited information dissemination to women, and limited participation of women in extra household activities and pressure on youth to earn income.
