The acute and complex crisis experienced in DRC for decades further deteriorated in 2020 due to persistent and structural issues, coupled with the detrimental impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, WFP assisted almost 6.9 million people across the country, with 3.7 million people receiving emergency food assistance and 1.5 million receiving cash-based transfers worth nearly USD46 million. WFP intensified and expanded the range of its interventions to assist a broader number of people in need, reaching more than 3.5 million IDPs and host families with food rations across the country. To support children’s nutrition and to mitigate risks of school drop-outs, WFP continued to assist schoolchildren with alternative take-home rations after schools closed in March, reaching more than 150,800 schoolchildren throughout the year. A total of 1.5 million children and pregnant and lactating women and girls (PLWGs) also received specialised nutritious foods for the treatment of moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) and the prevention of acute and chronic malnutrition (stunting). Among people with special needs, almost 69,000 persons living with disabilities were assisted by WFP. WFP strengthened its role as a development actor, promoting resilience-building, social protection, and inter-agency cooperation. In partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), WFP scaled up the implementation of joint resilience programmes in North and South Kivu, Tanganyika, and North and South Ubangi, benefitting around 517,000 people.
