Summary
Meeting nutrient needs is essential for good health throughout the life cycle, but nutritious diets are often not affordable in low-resource settings. Over the last three decades, there has been a significant increase in the access to, and consumption of, unhealthy snack foods in low- and middle-income countries. Fill the Nutrient Gap analyses in Asia and Latin America demonstrate that such high-energy, low-nutrient-density foods contribute to overnutrition by exceeding energy requirements and increase the likelihood of micronutrient deficiencies by making it more expensive to meet nutrient needs using diets based on local foods.
