Summary
Nicaragua has experienced steady economic and social progress over the past decade, with improvements in nutrition, education, and health. However, recurrent natural disasters, poverty, agricultural inefficiencies, and limited access to services continue to undermine food security, especially in remote areas. The Government’s National Human Development Plan promotes food security and sovereignty through culturally aligned strategies focused on smallholder productivity and family‑level solutions. Aligned with this strong policy environment, WFP’s Transitional Interim Country Strategic Plan supports national efforts to achieve zero hunger by extending and strengthening government programmes, especially in hard‑to‑reach and vulnerable communities. Through direct assistance and technical support, WFP aims to help break the intergenerational cycle of hunger and poverty. The plan focuses on five outcomes: ensuring access to food for schoolchildren and people living with HIV; meeting the nutritional needs of vulnerable groups; improving smallholder farmers’ food security and market access; supporting emergency food assistance; and strengthening national institutions to prevent and respond to shocks. The ICSP aligns with national priorities, WFP’s Strategic Results, and supports progress toward SDGs 2, 17, and related goals.
