Resúmen
Guatemala, despite steady economic growth, continues to face deep poverty and inequality. Food security and nutrition are national priorities under K’atun: Nuestra Guatemala 2032 and the 2024–2028 government agenda, which focus on strengthening social protection and reducing malnutrition. Yet nearly 60 percent of the population faces moderate or severe food insecurity, and 47 percent of children under five suffer from chronic malnutrition—among the highest global rates. Indigenous Peoples, rural communities and women and girls are most affected, with an estimated 3 million people expected to need humanitarian assistance in early 2026. WFP’s country strategic plan supports government efforts to address acute food insecurity, prevent malnutrition and strengthen capacities in disaster risk management, emergency response, social protection and food systems. It will provide assistance and technical support during crises and help local food system actors access markets and promote healthy, diverse diets. The plan centers on three outcomes: 1) meeting urgent food and nutrition needs and improving disaster response; 2) supporting vulnerable communities through sustainable, nutrition‑sensitive food systems; 3) enabling institutions and humanitarian actors to deliver programmes effectively. WFP will work closely with government, civil society, the private sector and UN partners to ensure sustainable transitions and support planned handovers.
